Turkish Grandmother’s Soft Braided Loaf

🍞 Soft & Fluffy Sliced Top Bread (Milk Bread)

Perfect for sandwiches or breakfast!

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 7 g dry yeast
  • 80 g sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • 80 g softened butter
  • 1 egg

For brushing:

  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk

Instructions

1. Prepare the dough

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it rest 10 minutes to activate.
  2. Add the egg, flour, and salt. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Add the softened butter and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.

2. Shape the bread (as in your picture)

  1. Roll the dough into a rectangle.
  2. Cut narrow strips without separating them (this gives the layered look).
  3. Gently roll the whole rectangle into a log.
  4. Place in a loaf pan lined with baking paper.
  5. Let rise again for 40 minutes.

3. Bake

  1. Brush with egg yolk + milk.
  2. Bake at 180°C (356°F) for 25–30 minutes until golden.

4. Cool and serve

Let it cool completely before slicing.

The texture becomes soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet — perfect for toast!
